How to Pray

One of the things that gives me utmost clarity, strength and direction is having time alone, with God. No fancy language or rituals but sincere connection with my divine creator and friend. Not what you were expecting to hear right? Yeah, thought not... I think that most religious organisations (church included) can make it so complicated sometimes. However, I value and encourage prayer because of the results. Being a deep thinker also means that my mind can be so cluttered and overwhelmed so having time to leave it all behind and just be in a spiritual space with God is uplifting. You may not be religious but I'm sure that life can be overwhelming at times so I would definitely recommend taking time out to reflect and build yourself up. For those wondering, however, this is how I pray.

1. Find a quiet spot; it's usually in my bedroom when family are asleep or out. I just make myself comfortable. If the house is too cluttered I will definitely get distracted and end up doing something else.

2. Be extremely honest; if I am emotional, sad, in pain, excited, then this is the place that it all comes out. I just pour it all out in prayer. I laugh, I cry, I talk about other people's issues, concerns and struggles (as I care and worry about them). Whatever I do in this time is genuine and heartfelt and honest. It's funny because this is where I get to see my true self - the good, the bad and the downright ugly! It isn't always pretty but it is certainly necessary to thrive.

3. Clear your mind; the days struggles, responsibilities and concerns will always be a distraction in this time if you focus on them. It's more effective to focus on why you're there, sitting, standing or kneeling in this spot. What do you want from that time? Will it fuel your day or make a difference? Are you wondering if God is real? If He actually hears? This is the time to truly find out.

4. Read the bible; this is a tricky one because I know some of you may be of other religions etc. I feel like it's okay to search for the truth. I say search for the truth and the truth will find you. I have found the bible to be truth and through it I have been able to understand the person I am praying to much better.

5. Be persistent; I am not saying that you are going to get the answers straight away and that everything is going to be hunky dory. If you feel like this doesn't help you then don't be disheartened just keep trying.

I have to make it clear that this is in no way a judgemental blog, but is here as a suggestion and to provide a solution to those who are searching. It has 1000% worked for me and that is why I share it, let me know if this article has made a difference to you and if so, pass it on!

Yours Sincerely,

Sal
