Why we are ‘Our Brother’s Keeper’

I sat down with a dear friend recently and they told me that it was becoming more and more popular for people to need counsellors. They highlighted that social media is so integrated into our way of life that we no longer look to ‘reach out’ and communicate with each other.

The Deception of Social Media

We see pretty smiles, families, cars, houses, designer clothes etc and we assume that life is better for the person posting. Sometimes we don’t realise that there is a lot of fear on social media platforms. There is fear to share the brutal reality that life isn’t easy. It may be a defence mechanism or just plain oversight, but this is the society that we have become.

It’s one of the reasons that I decided to created Yours Sincerely Sal. To be sincere in my journey. Honestly, whatever I don’t share is for the protection of my privacy and the privacy of those I love. However, I will always make it a priority to tell the complete truth with whatever I do share. I’m excited to see how it gives you confidence and inspiration. I like the idea of sharing my journey with you and hearing yours. To do that we will need to let go of the fear of being judged or rejected.

The world beyond social media

What kind of life do you have after you log off social media? Do you fulfil your dreams and visions? Do you reach out to those who you know are lonely? The world beyond social media is the world that matters most. It can make the world of difference if you take time out to make a difference in the lives of your loved ones. People suffer silently and don’t have anyone to talk about it with. Just taking the responsibility of texting, phoning or visiting someone could save a life. It’s great that we can ‘like’ or ‘share’ a picture on facebook but to reach out beyond social media carries something of permanent value.

Why Counsellors are on the rise

People simply need someone to talk to. Communicating effectively is becoming harder to do. Even I struggled trying to figure out haw to tackle this issue. However, the truth is, a simple blog can make a ripple affect on the readers and the people they talk to about this issue. I feel like we can all do small things to make a big difference. To spread care around the world and see real change.

This blog is intented to be in no way judgemental (as I am more than aware that we are all on a journey). The aim of this blog is to awaken us to a deeper state of consciousness in relation to how interlinked we are. We came into this world as a result of the sacrifice, care and assistance of others and I think that is significant in relation to how interlinked we actually are. I really believe that we don't survive (get depressed, lonely and even suicidal) when we are isolated.

On a positive note...

Which is how I would prefer to end this blog, there is so much we can do to change this. Firstly, let's start by looking a little closer and not being in such a hurry. Second be prepared to listen when someone says "I'm not doing okay." to your question of "how are you?" They may not say it with their mouths but their body language and eyes are a major giveaway. Finally, the world would be such a better place if we ALL actively thought "how can I make a positive impact on someone's life today?" What would happen if we cared a little more? What would happen if we, one by one, raised our hands to say “I am my brother’s keeper.”

Yours Sincerely,

Sal
